Live demo of the music gloves

In this video, I demonstrate how I use my MI.MU music gloves to build and record a progressive track during a live performance.

Have questions? Ask me in the comments and I’ll address them in my next video!

Experimenting with the Music Gloves

Music is a universal language.

How will we bring this important human expression on our journey to the stars?

I’m MaryLiz: a space artist, musician, and rocket launch filmmaker dazzled by this question.

ZERO-G MUSIC is my research project in which I explore all of the new ways we’ll bring our music with us as we begin to build communities on other worlds.

Here, I will share my journey as I

  • explore and experiment with new music instruments (starting with my Mi.Mu Gloves),
  • interview musicians who are considering how to take their art form to space,
  • talk to astronauts who are soon headed on these journeys as well as some who have already tried bringing traditional instruments to space.

MiMu Gloves unboxing

After nearly 8 years of anticipation, I am shocked to unbox my own pair of Mi.Mu Gloves!

In 2012, Imogen Heap announced her invention of musical midi gloves. Several years later, she formed the Mi.Mu Gloves team, which worked to mass-produce these gloves, providing musicians a way to make “music through movement.”

These glove synthesizers have a gyroscope, accelerometer, bend sensors and buttons that can all be mapped to audio software via midi. That means any combination of movements, postures, or button presses can be programmed to trigger any note/chord, sound, or effect, allowing you to dance (and float!) your way through your musical expression… oh, and you can also manipulate your own lighting and visual effects. 😀

I will share my entire journey here as I learn to use the midi gloves and the Glover software in conjunction with Ableton Live to create and perform music in such a new way.

For years, I’ve been particularly excited to explore this instrument as one that can be used to create and perform in space—whether in the Zero Gravity environment or on the surface of another world along with a spacesuit. I’m drawn to it most because it encourages organic, human movement. As we continue to journey further from our home planet, I’m hopeful we’ll go with our favorite side of humanity intact.
